1. It’s illegal to feed pigeons on the sidewalks and streets of San Francisco.

Feeding pigeons is illegal on the sidewalks and streets of San Francisco because it promotes over-breeding and pigeons lose their ability to naturally scavenge and survive. It also makes our neighbourhoods unhygienic which leads to various health diseases. 

2. Australia is wider than the moon

WHAT? Yes that’s true, the moon has a diameter of 3,400 kilometres (2,113 miles), while Australia’s diameter from east to west is almost 4,000 km (2,485 miles). The moon –being a sphere– has larger surface area but has smaller width than the continent Australia.

3. Headphones can increase the bacteria in your ears.

Yes! Headphones can increase the level of bacteria inside the ear by up to 700%. They stop the ear from being exposed to natural air which traps the bacteria inside the ear and causes ear infections.

4. Scotland chose the unicorn as its national animal.

In celtic mythology, the unicorn is a symbol of purity, innocence and power. These creatures are independent and difficult to capture or conquer. Although they are mythological, Scottish people feel drawn towards unicorns’ characteristics and what they represent. 

5. Avocados are not vegetables.

Although they are not as sweet as other fruits, avocados do fit under the definition of a fruit. They are big berries with a single seed and are botanically classified as fruits. 

6. The Eiffel Tower gets taller in the summer.

How is that even possible? 

A physical phenomenon called thermal expansion causes the iron to expand due to the heat in summer, increasing the volume of the Eiffel tower and adding a few millimetres to make it taller. 

The sun’s rays reach only one of the four sides of the eiffel tower which causes an imbalance and makes it tilt a bit away from the sun. 

7. Switzerland prohibits the ownership of just one guinea pig.

In Switzerland, you cannot own just one guinea pig because they are social species and need social interaction to feel good. It is considered harmful to its well-being and forbidden by law.

The ones which are not able to interact with other species on a regular basis are considered as victims of abuse. 

8. Sloths can hold their breath longer than dolphins.

Sloths are great swimmers, they slow down their heart rate and have reported to have held their breath for 20 minutes. Some sloths have even reported holding it for 40 minutes. 

On the other hand, dolphins can stay underwater only for around 10 minutes. 

9. The first aeroplane flight was on December 17, 1903.

Wright brothers worked hard for four years in research and development, after which, on the morning of December 17, 1903, it first flew in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. 

Orville piloted the first flight that lasted just 12 seconds and 120 feet.

10. Black sapote tastes like chocolate pudding.

The black sapote is a fruit which is a species of persimmon. It is often referred to as the “chocolate pudding fruit” because of its taste with honey, caramel, date and mineral tones.
